 | | | | Rant of the day: Old C&C sites. | | | | | [ Posted on September 04, 2005, 10:32:54 PM ] [Want to Post News?]
And we finally have a rant in 2 years of CnCCommunity.net. Miracle? No. This C&C 10th Anniversary has been an exciting event, certainly. Many contests on many C&C sites in the same time. An absurd ammount of interviews, new contents, sites being redesigned and... EA strongly supporting the event. They are providing prizes for events, updating the Generals site with contents about the event, but... one of their moves can definitelly kill the old games: the official sites from old C&C games are extinct. All of them linking to the official Generals site. Although the main intention seems to bring attention to the event, they are kiling one of their last links for these games making them look like an abandonware.
As webmaster of Project Perfect Mod, a modding community that cares and support modders for Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2 and old games, I decided to voice against this action in the hope that someone from EA listens and sort it. So, I've posted a rant there. Here's a snippet:
"In order to bring the attention of the C&C fans for the event, they have redirected all pre-Generals C&C sites and Westwood.com straight to the Generals site, so visitors could see the banner and, consequently, know about the events.
However, it is a bad move. With no site, these games now looks like abandonwares. No information about the game, the patch and whatever files related with these games are only officially available in the Westwood Public FTP which is not mentioned by the Generals site. The support for these games is now even more hidden, although if you head yourself to www.redalert3.com you can still reach the old C&C section of EA. I know the Generals site has a support link, but will any user think of that when looking for Tiberian Sun or any other 'ancients*' support? And I don't need to mention that the lastest news in the Generals news section is about the Zero Hour 1.03 patch, which old and the patches section only links the north american 1.04 patch. The others you have to use your brillant mind to solve the hidden puzzle to finally find out that the patches for the other languages are HERE!"
In the rant, I describe the problem and I point solutions for this as well. I hope the party continues celebrating the anniversary of the first Command & Conquer, instead of killing it. That's my two cents, enjoy the read and let's make some noise for a better future of C&C! Posted by: Banshee
